4 Things You Always Forget When Moving
Moving is so chaotic – it’s easy to forget a lot of things when you are juggling so much. Primarily, most people just forget where they packed things like the pizza slicer or the books they are currently reading. But some people forget bigger things that have a real impact on the overall success of the move, making it much more stressful or even derailing it.
A little planning and working with the right moving company will make your move go a lot more smoothly. Keep these four things that people always forget when moving in mind so that you can have a better experience:
Labeling All the Boxes
You shouldn’t hope to remember where your belongings are just by looking at the boxes. Even if you have boxes with different markings or colorings, they will all start to blend together eventually. To find your things quickly when you are unpacking, you need to label all the boxes carefully while you are packing.
Create a short inventory list for each box, such as “plates and drinking glasses” or “pictures hanging in hall.” Don’t actually detail the list, such as describing each picture that’s in the box. Then label each box according to what room the items should go in. You can put the word, mark the box with a number, or even use a color-coded label. When the movers unload your belongings, they can put the right boxes in the right rooms, ensuring that everything is already sorted when you are ready to start unpacking.
Removing Items from Dressers and Cabinets
It might seem easier to leave all the clothes in your dresser or the toys in the storage cabinets. These pieces of furniture can act as their own boxes, and they are already packed! But leaving items in this furniture just makes them very heavy and very difficult to move. Even if you are hiring movers to do the heavy lifting for you, there are still many drawbacks to leaving your items inside the furniture.
Anything you leave in a dresser, cabinet, or other storage unit is prone to being damaged. Glass or other items with weight can shift around and either break or become cracked or scratched. But even softer items that won’t move, like clothing, can become dirty or torn from all the movement. Plus, the furniture itself can become damaged when its drawers and other compartments are moved around because of the weight of the things inside. All items need to be packaged separately and appropriately to keep them safe.
Reserving Elevators
If you live in an apartment or condo – or you plan to move to one – you may need a freight elevator to get your belongings up to your new home. Yet, depending on the property management, you may have to reserve these elevators before you can use them. Or you may need to reserve the elevators just to ensure that someone else won’t be using them when you need them most.
Typically, service or freight elevators are protected with padding and blankets, which will help prevent damage to both the elevator and to the things inside it. Some property managers may also require that your moving company provide a certificate of insurance or that you get your own insurance if you are doing the moving yourself.
Reserving Parking Spots
There won’t always be a parking spot right where you need one outside your apartment building or condo. If you live in or are moving to a big city, there might not be any parking spots at all. You will need to reserve a spot for your moving truck both at the place where you currently live and the place where you are moving.
If there is no space for your movers to park, the move may take much longer, and you may end up paying a lot more. If the truck parks somewhere it shouldn’t and is ticketed, you’ll be on the hook for paying the fine. Just call ahead and reserve the spaces so your move will go smoothly and you’ll stay on budget.
Moving doesn’t have to be stressful. You can make it easier with the right planning and with the right movers in Mesa. Make sure you don’t forget any of these essential steps in your moving process and you’ll be on your way to a successful move!
